post 3: "The Little Street"

Johannes Vermeer, The Little Street, 1658

The painting, "The Little Street", by Jogannes Vermeer is an oil painting that was created in 1658. This painting have a building on the street. The street is not crowd or anything, but two people in the doorway doing their task. From the painting, the street might be very old and historical because the buildings are ruinous. The cracks on the building, hollow windows, no doors in the doorway, and no ray of light express the feeling of emptiness. So, this painting is named "The Little Street" because it gives out a feeling of emptiness. However, the background shows the clear sky and other buildings' roof which tells me that it is a town. Yet, I think that this might be the ONLY street that is empty rather than other streets are filled with laughters and enjoyments.

Why is there only two people in this painting? Are they the only people on this street? What type of people are they? How do they live? Is this town always like this?
