post 12: Laura Owens

From the pictures of post 11, Laura Owen's artwork is not considered to be postmodern because none of her artwork include the postmodern visual strategies. But, her artwork is her distinctive style that she feel comfortable and enjoy to make. So, Laura Owens is able to make any type of her artwork while she enjoys the process.
However, I identify a little bit use of layering. Her colors and the use of the mediums overlap throughout her artworks which creates a layering technique. Even though the picture above is not a big final creation, but her techniques are used in the artwork. So, this picture can conclude that Laura Owens is consider to be postmodern .

The artist I found interesting throughout her artworks was Laura Owens. To begin with, Laura Owens was born in Euclid, Ohio in the 1970s. She was a young artist after exhibiting her artworks to the world. Moreover, she attended Rhode Island School of Design and California Institute of Arts. She graduated in 1992 and in 1994; she received both, BFA and MFA for arts. So, she had the education of arts to become an artist. Furthermore, in 2003, Laura exhibits her artworks at MOCA, so she works and lives in Los Angeles, California. Therefore, Laura Owens’ artwork gives me a sense of natural feeling and the bright light of nature.

Beautiful Cliché by Chopen

This photography is called "Beautiful Cliché" by Chopen who is desired to express the cliché of this beautiful photo. To begin with, the wheel prints at the bottom of the photo is pulling viewers' attention to the prints because wheel prints are not seen on a beach. So, the cliché is the wheel prints that kind of separated the photo into two. Moreover, this photo is beautiful and romantic scenery on the beach with a couple strolling along the beach. However, the wheel prints destroyed the romantic mood and the beautiful environment of the beach. Lastly, at the top of the photo, there are clouds that are crosses like the letter "x" which shows negativity about the picture. So, this photo itself is ironic. Therefore, the cliché of the photo sways viewers' attention to either the wheel prints or the cloud in the sky, rather than the beautiful and romantic day of the couple on the beach.

Postmodern Alice

This piece of artwork is called Postmodern Alice. Alice is definitely the royal young lady in the staircases because of her dress and elegant posture. The heart bubbles, and a floating clock is ticking every minute make this artwork a fantasy place. But, the young man's clothing at the bottom of the picture is modern -like outfit, rather than a suit like a prince. The tie is not properly tied, and the coat is not button-up where a prince would dress all formal. So, the appearance of the two people on the staircases, both describes the used of appropriation. The artists used appropriation because he or she changed the prince and princess figurative image that I had pictured in story books. Another postmodern visual strategy is layering because the background consists of the drawn window with prints on it, and the wall of symbolic meanings to it. A So, the layering of the background created a postmodern artwork.

Post 8: First Quarter Reflection

In the first quarter of art was amazing. I learned many different art perspectives, and art criticism. Perspective in art creates criticism and different purposes. From that I also learned that art is not just a written or drawn object, but it is beyond that. Art has many meanings to define them. So, art does not have a specific definition to the art world. Additionally, art had many definitions and varieties to explain what art is. Art may mean beauty, idealism, decoration, creativity, etc. In art creativity class, we also learned the elements and principles of art. We used element and principle to make an accordion book. This project was enjoyable because I got a clearer definition of how to apply elements and principles to art. Therefore, the first quarter of art was great because I learned many new art topics beyond drawing and painting.

Post #7: my element and principle learning hand-made book

In this art activity, we were asked to make our own book. When I got my book, I did not really have a target in making what. So, my ideas just develop throughout the process. Today, we talked about how sometimes art process through working, instead of an idea just right on top of your mind. So, my book came out perfectly. However, throughout the project, the challenging part was following the steps. The steps were guiding me through the activity, but if I could do something different, I would not follow the steps on the guidelines because it distract the art process. So, I think that the activity should not have guidelines in what to do.
Throughout the activity, the topic of the book was about the elements and principles of art. To begin with, the elements of art are line, form, color, value, shape, texture and space. These elements are the building block of an artwork. However, the principle of art is how we want the picture to be, or what we want people to see and feel. It includes movement, rhythm, emphasis, balance, contrast, pattern and unity. So, we created our book that represents elements and principles of art. Last, both element and principles of art are combined together. When it is combined together, it creates a great art piece. So, art creates the element and principle of art.

First, we created our cover that is an abstract picture. Abstract art is nonrepresentational, so there should not being any emphasis on the picture. However, the book is not about abstract art, but it is about how the elements and principles of art work together in art. After working on the book for weeks, I think that I got a better understanding about elements and principles of art. The process began by making shapes, and then adding color and lines that would create movement and emphasis. After the front side of the book is done, we had to make our own poem using the vocabulary words on elements and principles of art. In my book, my poem is very creative because I put emphasis on the words throughout the poem. For example, the word "3-D", I drew the word in 3-D. Also, we created an author page. This page includes my picture, and few sentences about the author. In summary, I had a fun experience in creating this book because I learned art by making art. So, this activity helped me understand the elements and principles of art.

Frances Pickering

This hand-made book is created by Frances Pickering. This creation is gives me a feeling of elegancy and historical item. To begin with, this book's texture is fragile because the wrinkle paper edges reflects the book to be old and historic. Also, inside the book, the pictures are drawn in the theme of nature. The visual idea of nature determines their love and inspiration to nature. Lastly, the cover of the book must be as beautiful as the inside because the strings on the side of the book closes up the book into one. So, the unity of this book is a small creation that is put together. Therefore, this creation of hand-made books are lovely to interpret the creators' ideas while they are creating any books, because I think that all hang-made books are very meaningful.

Fernand Leger, Railway Crossing, 1919

This abstract drawing expresses a very complex and busy feeling. The movement represents the busy motion. Also, the painting reflects a map like structure because the arrow and the lines give the painting divisions. The shapes also includes into the painting because in the background you see circles and rectangles. Since the background is colored, some spaces were left blank like the line in the middle of the picture. The line ended the middle ground to the left side of the picture. So, that white space is just black and stopped my thought to the left side. Other elements or principles I observe are uncertainty. I cannot able to find where this painting is leading me into because the painting is confusing. I do not know where to start looking and where to end. It brings me around the painting, so I first thought that the painting was a busy and crowded place.

Michal Levy, Funky (Bright), 2006
Two elements of this artwork are color and line. The colors in this artwork is very bright and colorful, and the lines really define the differences of the object and background. In this painting, there are several more in this category. Can you find out what are the other elements of art?
On the other hand, two principles of this art piece are proportion and rhythm. The buildings in this painting indicate the sizes. The scale of the building is different, and the colors and structures express a lively beat to the artwork. So, rhythm fits perfectly to this painting. In this painting, there are also other principles, can you figure out what it is?

post 3: "The Little Street"

Johannes Vermeer, The Little Street, 1658

The painting, "The Little Street", by Jogannes Vermeer is an oil painting that was created in 1658. This painting have a building on the street. The street is not crowd or anything, but two people in the doorway doing their task. From the painting, the street might be very old and historical because the buildings are ruinous. The cracks on the building, hollow windows, no doors in the doorway, and no ray of light express the feeling of emptiness. So, this painting is named "The Little Street" because it gives out a feeling of emptiness. However, the background shows the clear sky and other buildings' roof which tells me that it is a town. Yet, I think that this might be the ONLY street that is empty rather than other streets are filled with laughters and enjoyments.

Why is there only two people in this painting? Are they the only people on this street? What type of people are they? How do they live? Is this town always like this?

post 2: race and gender criticism

In the article, "race and gender criticism" was about the criticism that artists receive. Artists' artwork were view base upon their race and gender. For example, women or non-white had stereotypes which gave artist no recognition. So, art was all about their perspectives. Art criticism also includes western art. Viewers discriminate non-western art because they feel that it is "strange". However, when i critique other people's art, i do not care whether who are the artists. The most important part is that the artwork is a meaningful piece of its purpose. So, i do not think critique should be base upon race, gender or anything.

What do you think about criticism?
How do you feel if someone gave you a criticism base upon your race or gender?

my very first art experience

My first memory that i started to experienced art was when i was at elementary school. At elementary school, i started painting, and drawing. I loved to color. As a child, i was never inspired in art yet. However, when i was in eighth grade, i applied for an art institute. This art insititute provided many opporunity for me to find my way in art. I also found my purpose of doing art becuase this art insititute gave me an inspiration to continue exploring art. I think, this was the timing when i experienced REAL art because i used art tools and met some artist teachers. These art tools were very useful in artwork, and i learned a lot of art skills. Many of the artist teachers brought us on field trips around the city and invited some artists to talk to us. In the art institute, there is an important duty and responsibility for the finally art piece that would be hanged in their galleries. I felt like an artist, and i would not forget this experience.
